The “Rich Fool” made a big mistake when he began to ask himself a critical question and sought no advice or ideas from a trusted relative or friend. He said in essence, “ I’ve got all these goods. My barns are pouring out with fresh grain. I’m beyond prosperous!. Then he asked himself, “What must I do?” He never suspected that his very life was at risk (Luke 12:20)—God called him a fool!” due to his selfishness and his poverty in giving. Like many and too many people nowadays, he may not even had a burial site. The parable doesn’t actually say that. I am just introducing some circumstances that were left to deal with. This person was rich in grain, but poor in the spirit of giving. Rather than trying to shed some of his wealth or give grain to those more needy than he, his avenue, his thoughts were to figure out how to reproduce his results of growing excess grain again. Greed took hold of him. He wanted more, more, more. His thinking was, “now I can lay back and won’t have to work any more years; but I can just be fat and continue to be “a rich fool.”
Oh, he never thought himself to be a fool. He may have thought, “Oh, I’m the richest and happiest on earth. He’s not only the kind of rich fool there is. There are some who gamble and expect their gambling will pay off profitably. And perhaps that may have happened some time or another. Then there are others who decide to gamble on the race track and bet on horses. There are some who gamble on sports and even dogs running. These are short lived spiritually adulterous activities and they are habits put forth in the place of God. God doesn’t like it. Remember Nebuchadnezzer (Daniel 4)? Daniel (around fifty-two years old. He had prophesied about Nebuchadnezzar’s downfall because of his pride and his self indulging kingdom. He was lifted up in pride. Proclaiming how great he was and he did everything by himself. I did this. I did that. I’m the greatest.
Remember how Daniel, the prophet, had seen the watchers come down (Daniel 4:23) had warned him to break off his idolatrous, atrocious, pagan behavior (sins) Remember he lost his mind for seven years (Daniel was then approximately fifty nine years old when his mind returned) and after seven years his senses returned? Here’s the point. God (Jehovah) doesn’t change. He is the same, yesterday and tomorrow, forever. Build up your barns; but, don’t become selfish, greedy and covetous. Give to the poor and you don’t have to look far to find them. The rich fool was struck down and that doesn’t all the time mean you have to abruptly die. God has multiple ways to warn us about our misbehavior. He doesn’t punish. He warns and chastises. Build up your business!!! Seek the Lord’s guidance all along the way; but don’t forget where your wisdom comes from when you’re prosperous. Give the glory to the Lord God Almighty. Thanks for reading!
