July is National Independent Retailer Month, which got me thinking about what really makes local retailers special? We all know that store where the owner actually remembers your name and asks about your kids.

Running a successful retail business shouldn’t just be about moving inventory. It’s about creating something that actually matters to people. And truth be told; we need that now more than ever.

I recently read a 2025 study from Cigna Group stating that more than half of Americans say they feel lonely regularly. Which got me thinking—it’s a massive opportunity for the small retailers who get it.

I remember  this book I read a while back called Small Giants by Bo Burlingham, and it completely changed how I think about business. The companies he profiles didn’t want to get huge—they wanted to get great. They focused on making a real impact instead of just growing for growth’s sake.

Rituals: Create rituals people look forward to. Maybe it’s wine and cheese every first Friday. Maybe it’s a book club for your regulars. The point is giving people a reason to come back that has nothing to do with needing to buy something.

Connections: Help your customers connect with each other. Don’t just focus on your relationship with them—help them build relationships with each other. Set up a bulletin board where they can leave messages. Create a cozy corner where people naturally start talking. Host events that bring like-minded people together.

Beliefs: Stand for something that matters. People connect with businesses that have values, not just products. Whether you’re all about sustainability, supporting local artists, or just creating a space where everyone feels welcome—make sure people can see what you care about.

How Retail Can Heal Communities

When someone walks into your store and you remember their name… when they feel comfortable enough to stick around and chat… that’s not just good customer service. That’s healing.
