In a world that often equates leadership with visibility and performance, mattering shifts the lens toward something deeper: the belief that each person is significant. According to Zach Mercurio, mattering is built on three essential experiences—feeling valued, adding value, and belonging. It’s more than a feel-good idea—it’s a biological and social necessity that impacts everything from motivation to mental health.
Mattering became real for me during an intense leadership development program. I was holding back on a project, doubting the quality of my work. Instead of letting me retreat, the facilitator paused the entire group and said, “You matter. We will wait for you to finish.” That wasn’t just accountability. That was an affirmation I didn’t know I needed—and I’ve never forgotten how it made me feel.
As a leader at the LA South HOPE Foundation, I carry that moment into everything I do. Whether I’m preparing meals, helping friends, or greeting clients, I strive to make sure people leave feeling seen and significant. We don’t just serve—we affirm. We don’t just lead—we create space where dignity is a given.
Mattering in leadership means shifting from outcome-driven to person-driven. It’s how we transform burnout into belonging and routine into purpose. Because when someone believes they matter they don’t just show up—they light up. And that’s where real leadership begins.
