The Benefit of Doing Nothing

by By Cheryl Tate

There are many names for quiet time: the part of your schedule where you spend time to do very little. Yes, I said “very little” as a matter of fact I mean “nothing”. Another season, it’s the end of the year and there is the next: event, meeting, zoom call, engagement to plan, and so on. This is a perfect opportunity to make time to be quiet. Doing nothing is a luxury that can be afforded when the right investment is made.

This is for you to center yourself to see where you are.  We know of the religious sense as “Be Still and know that I am God”. Even here we are charged to have quiet time.  It is to take inventory of your surroundings, are we going in the right direction? Is this what we want to do? Am I happy with my job? What about that idea I had for a new product? Contemplation of our position in life and anything new to try takes TIME to plan it out. One must make steps to reach the goal, with as little distraction as possible to envision the outcome.

Getting quiet makes room for ideas to come forth, the answer to that question that has been nagging you from last month. Once we are in a quiet space, answers come forth that have been buried and trying to call out. We did not slow to hear the “still small voice,” it’s a habit for success when we take time to listen.

Lately I came across an article on quiet time described as “white space” comparing it to a whiteboard and spacing out the time. It called for taking out blocks of time to recharge and refocus. To look past the “too busy” and “the hustle” to (again) slow down and smell that rose.

This sounds like I’m being redundant on spelling out the importance of time spent alone.  Which includes the phone turned off, no computer or audio or visual. Our minds are great producers of ideas abound; it’s called imagination. The only way there is to turn everything off, the luxury of silence will make a better place.
