If you know a student in high school or community college you may already be part of the College Transfer Maze. That was the topic of an excellent webinar produced by Edsouce on understanding and streamlining college transfers.
Many students are encouraged to attend community college. The two years in these local colleges gives students a chance to improve their grade point average, remain at home and save money before heading for a university. The problem is it often doesn’t work. Students get lost in a maze of differing requirements and missed opportunities.
To solve some of these problems the state legislature passed AB 8928 last year. This bill created the Associate Degree for Transfer ADT. All community college freshmen are given the option of an ADT pathway that is designed to help them navigate the 4-year university enrollment process.
Unfortunately, there are still barriers to college enrollment, mainly that the CSUs and UCs don’t have the same general ed. requirements.
The webinar consisted of a panel of administrators from California colleges along with a student who very clearly spoke about her experience.
Discussions at home or at school can’t start too soon. Many schools discuss the value of college and the many options available to students, but some do not. High school students often miss important information because they simply don’t understand the value of a college degree.
